What Is the Grooming Process for Cats?

Cat grooming isn’t just about keeping your cat looking great. It’s also vital for their health. While cats are known for their self-cleaning habits, they also need a little extra help from humans. Grooming sessions can target those hard-to-reach areas and handle the other things (like nail trimming) your cat can’t do themselves.

Professional cat grooming goes beyond basic bathing and brushing. Our Certified Feline Master Groomers focus on providing a rewarding experience, one that keeps your feline friend looking and feeling their best. And when you use mobile cat grooming, we can do it all from the comfort of your home, keeping your kitty from feeling stressed.

Here’s what’s involved in the grooming process and how our at-home cat grooming service keeps your pet’s safety our top priority.

Give a Thorough Brushing

We begin each grooming session with a good brushing. This helps to remove excess fur and prevent matting. It also gives us a chance to see if we need to trim the fur or remove existing mats. We’ll also check for lumps, rashes, or other skin issues.

Brushing and deshedding will reduce hairballs and make it easier for us to clean your cat and spot potential issues, such as skin conditions or parasites.

Trim the Fur (If Needed)

If your cat has long fur or has gotten mats since their last grooming, we’ll trim their fur and remove the mats. We use safety scissors with rounded tips for comb cuts and quiet clippers for shaving to create a safe and stress-free environment.

Beyond mat removal, we offer full pelt removal and sanitary haircuts during our cat mobile grooming sessions. For those looking for a more creative look for their cat, we also offer lion cuts, to resemble a lion’s mane, and bolero cuts, which look like a fabulous sweater.

Enjoy a Bath

Most cats are good at keeping themselves clean in between groomings. But some areas are hard for your cat to reach themselves, such as the base of the tail or the back. You might not need to bathe them often, but they do still need to be bathed every few weeks to maintain good overall health and eliminate litter box bacteria.

For our cat baths, we use shampoos made specifically for cats, and we take care to review each ingredient. Our team will run a lukewarm bath and help your cat feel as comfortable as possible, complete with a full body massage. If needed, we can also use specialty shampoos to treat ailments such as dandruff, fleas, and dermatitis.

Check for Parasites

Part of our duty to our customers is to care for your whole cat, not just their appearance. Parasites (such as fleas or ticks) can weaken your pet’s immune system, create skin problems, and even lead to worms or other health problems.

Our cat grooming mobile service team is trained to look for parasites that might be hiding under your cat’s coat. We’ll let you know of any signs of parasites so you can address them with your vet.

Trim the Nails

Keeping your cat’s nails trimmed prevents them from getting too sharp, long, and brittle. It also reduces the risk of the nails growing into the paw pads. We use special cat nail trimmers that avoid cutting into the quick (the sensitive part inside the nail). For indoor cats, we can also apply non-toxic nail caps to protect their nails and your furniture.

If you have an outdoor cat that needs long nails, we take care not to cut them too short. This will allow them to continue climbing trees and having the ability to defend themselves if needed.

Clean the Ears and Eyes

Your cat can clean most of their bodies themselves, but the ears aren’t one of them. Cats’ ears can accumulate with dirt, wax, and even ear mites. Leaving debris in the ears can cause infections and discomfort.

We gently clean the visible parts of the ear with a damp cloth, then use an ear wash when necessary to clean inside the ear. We never insert anything into the ear canal, which could damage your cat’s hearing.

For kitty facials, we also clean your cat’s eyes. Gunk can build up in the corners of their eyes. We use a soft, damp cloth to wipe away this buildup, taking care not to touch the eye directly.

Offer Dental Care

Just like you, your cat needs dental cleanings to remove tartar and keep their teeth strong and healthy. We brush your cat’s teeth with a cat-specific toothbrush and enzyme toothpaste. This will help remove plaque and prevent buildup from occurring.

Cats usually don’t enjoy this process, but it’s a necessary part of holistic feline care. Dental cleanings will keep their breath fresh, their teeth healthy, and allow them to enjoy a higher quality of life.

Check Your Kitty’s Paws

Your cat’s paw pads experience significant wear every day. We care for these sensitive areas of their bodies by checking for cuts or sores and looking for ticks, mats, and debris in between their toes. Keeping their paw pads clean is important to their health, especially if they go outside. If your cat’s paw pads are dry or cracked, we can nourish this area to reduce sensitivity and improve their look and feel.

The Kitty Spaw Approach to Cat Grooming

Kitty Spaw is a professional mobile cat grooming spa service exclusively for cats. We help you and your precious kitty avoid the nerve-wracking process of traveling to the groomer, allowing them to feel comfortable in their own home.

We are a team of Certified Feline Master Groomers, which requires passing nine exams to earn a highly-regarded certification to work with cats. To earn this certification, we bring vast knowledge of different cats and breeds, safe handling techniques, recognition of common health concerns, and a passion for helping cats and their owners.

Your cat’s safety is our top priority. We know cat grooming isn’t a favorite activity for all felines. They can get anxious and twitchy, especially being around strangers armed with scissors, blow dryers, and sprayers. That’s why we take care to select safe tools and products to use on nervous kitties and create calming environments that will help to reduce their fears and allow them to enjoy our kitty spa.
